Start with the decision
Define the time period and useful service expected from retained equipment. Storage can preserve assets, but an unused item does not deliver the same service as confirmed deployments. Keep operational capacity and environmental modelling as related but distinct questions.
Build the record
Record storage arrangement, care, handling, space basis and any relevant measured activity. State how shared facilities are allocated under the chosen method. Keep booked deployment, confirmed use and availability as separate fields. Include condition and replacement information that changes expected service life.
Check before acting
Test shorter utilisation and different storage or handling assumptions where suitable data exist. State which inputs are estimated and which cannot yet be assessed. Avoid allocating zero merely because the warehouse is shared, or assigning all facility impact to one item without a defensible method.
Worked example — illustrative
A fictional business buys a reusable backdrop expecting frequent use, but several planned campaigns are cancelled. The inventory records the actual uses and storage period. The lifecycle reviewer tests lower utilisation and documents the allocation approach. The asset can remain useful operationally while the original environmental scenario needs revision.
Keep a useful handover
Close the “Explain the role of storage and utilisation in a scenario” decision with a named owner and a dated evidence version. The next working record is “Build a lifecycle record”. Record whether that step is planned or confirmed; retain the prior decision if new information changes the instruction.
- Define period and service.
- Record storage activity.
- Explain shared allocation.
- Use confirmed utilisation.
- Test lifetime assumptions.
