Identify the declared product
Read the product description before opening the result table. Record the manufacturer, named variant or group, included sites, declaration number, publication date and validity. Confirm whether the document describes the exact item you intend to use. A group declaration can need careful interpretation when your chosen variant differs from the representative product.
Check the method
An Environmental Product Declaration presents environmental information under a programme and applicable product category rules. EPD International publishes a PCR library. Record the rule identifier, version, declared or functional unit, lifecycle stages and relevant scenarios. These details define which comparisons the information can support.
Examine what happens after production
Look for assumptions about transport, replacement, service life and treatment where included. Keep separately declared information beyond the product system distinguishable from the core result. Ask a qualified assessor about methodological differences that materially affect the comparison rather than selecting the smaller headline figure.
Translate the document into a practical request
If the declaration covers only a base material, request information on printing and the finished construction. If the units differ, establish the conversion with measured dimensions and mass. Keep the original document and an explicit applicability note together. A published EPD is useful evidence, but its existence alone does not establish superiority.
Worked example — illustrative
A buyer finds declarations for two material products, but one reports a different reference quantity and covers different stages. The team saves both sources and records the mismatch before comparing. It asks for measured mass and method interpretation where needed. Printing, mounting and transport remain additional inputs. The declarations become part of the evidence set rather than a ready-made verdict on the whole campaign.
- Match the declared product.
- Record rule and version.
- Read units and stages.
- Document applicability to the assembly.
