Work through the decision
Identify the document size, stated scale and required finished dimensions in explicit units. Calculate the final output before judging effective raster resolution or geometry. Distinguish trim size, bleed and any hardware fixing allowance. Record the supplier’s actual requirements rather than assuming that every application uses one universal specification.
A fictional worked example
A fictional file is 100 mm wide at a 1:10 scale for a 1,000 mm graphic. The learner records the enlargement multiplier as 10 and checks the final image resolution at that width. Reading only the document-size value would conceal the true output.
Evidence and authority limit
Dimension arithmetic is a basic check and does not establish professional preflight, colour, technical fit or production approval.
Put it into practice
Use the resolution tool to compare a full-size file with the same final graphic supplied at reduced scale.
Keep this record: A final-size check with source dimensions, scale, units and supplier requirements.
- Document and final dimensions are distinguished.
- Units and enlargement are explicit.
- The result retains its basic-check limitation.
