Understand practical preflight

Inspect source assets

Inspect source image, font and artwork rights before making a production handover.

LESSON-020Informal learningReviewed 2026-10-04

Work through the decision

Record each source asset’s origin, version, permitted use and relationship to the final artwork. Check embedded raster dimensions, missing links and font availability where your tools can detect them. Separate a permission to view a file from permission to alter or reproduce its contents. Identify any unsupported inspection so the supplier receives an honest check record.

A fictional worked example

A fictional poster uses a licensed image and a missing linked logo. The learner requests the authorised logo file and checks whether the image licence covers the intended print use. A visible preview does not resolve either missing-source or permitted-use question.

Evidence and authority limit

A browser preview cannot guarantee complete file structure, embedding, font licensing or professional production suitability.

Put it into practice

Make a source-asset inventory for a fictional graphic containing one image, one font and one linked logo.

Keep this record: Asset versions, rights references, detectable issues and unresolved source requests.

  • The source and version of each asset are recorded.
  • Permitted use matches the intended output.
  • Undetectable issues remain for appropriate review.
