Work through the decision
Identify the complete assembly and each replaceable or detachable part. Record quantity, condition, attachment and parent version. Link technical documents and actual compatibility evidence. A good component map reveals whether a graphic can be refreshed while retaining hardware, and which changed parts would affect evidence or recovery.
A fictional worked example
A fictional display contains a serviceable frame and a damaged graphic. The map separates them and shows removable fixings. The learner can request a replacement graphic without describing the whole display as unusable.
Evidence and authority limit
A component diagram is a planning aid, not a safe-disassembly instruction or verified engineering model.
Put it into practice
Map a fictional assembly and identify one retained, one replaceable and one uncertain component.
Keep this record: A versioned component register with connection and evidence references.
- Every component links to a parent assembly.
- Connections and quantity are explicit.
- Technical and recovery uncertainties remain visible.
