Work through the decision

Identify the manufacturer variant, fibre composition as supplied, weave or construction, coatings and grammage when documented. Retain the source, units, revision and evidence state for each property. Include printing or treatment changes that affect the final construction. Unknown composition remains a useful unresolved field rather than a guessed percentage.

A fictional worked example

In a fictional exercise, two textiles share a family label but only one has an exact composition declaration. The learner records the other’s composition as unknown and asks for variant-specific documentation before comparing a receiving route.

Evidence and authority limit

A trade label or generic fabric family does not verify composition, content percentages, durability or environmental performance.

Put it into practice

Create a variant record showing declared construction, documented grammage and two unknown properties.

Keep this record: A sourced textile construction record with explicit units and missing information.

  • The exact variant and revision are named.
  • Values retain sources and units.
  • Unknown composition is not invented.
