Original Leaf research brief

A square metre of material is not a square metre of service

Area-based EPDs are useful inputs, but thickness, mass, exposure and replacement frequency determine whether alternatives deliver the same service.

Research question

Area-based EPDs are useful inputs, but thickness, mass, exposure and replacement frequency determine whether alternatives deliver the same service.

    A worked project scenario

A retail team compares a thin paper poster, an engineered board and a rigid panel for a reusable counter. Each has a different structural role. Equal printed area does not make them interchangeable.

      Method to use

Define the counter load, permitted deflection, moisture exposure and intended campaigns. Match each design to those requirements, then calculate material quantities and replacement scenarios. Report declared units unchanged and document any derived mass conversion explicitly.

        Limits of the conclusion

Leaf has not measured the service life of these alternatives. A unit conversion cannot repair a mismatch in performance, construction or lifecycle method.

          Questions for the actual application

          • Which exact source, unit and version support the decision?
          • Which project quantities are measured, and which remain assumptions?
          • What could change the result after installation or recovery?

          Scope and limitations

          • Leaf has not measured the service life of these alternatives. A unit conversion cannot repair a mismatch in performance, construction or lifecycle method.
