Original Leaf research brief

Keep management certificates separate from product evidence

An environmental management certificate describes a system and organisational scope. It does not supply a product carbon factor or a material fire class.

Research question

An environmental management certificate describes a system and organisational scope. It does not supply a product carbon factor or a material fire class.

    A worked project scenario

A coated-textile supplier provides an ISO 14001 document for one manufacturing site, while the proposed banner may come from another location. The procurement file needs both site identity and product evidence.

      Method to use

Record certificate body, accredited scope where applicable, site, issue and validity. Check the currently applicable edition and transition arrangements. Link it to organisational capability, then separately request product construction, EPD or fire reports. Avoid placing unrelated evidence under one approved badge.

        Limits of the conclusion

A valid system certificate is neither proof of best environmental performance nor certification of every product. Leaf has not verified supplier certificates merely because their download links exist.

          Questions for the actual application

          • Which exact source, unit and version support the decision?
          • Which project quantities are measured, and which remain assumptions?
          • What could change the result after installation or recovery?

          Scope and limitations

          • A valid system certificate is neither proof of best environmental performance nor certification of every product. Leaf has not verified supplier certificates merely because their download links exist.
